PERITO MORENO GLACIER WAITS FOR THE BIGGEST RUPTURE

Huge expectations in Calafate for the next massive fracture of the distinguished Glacier , the most impressive in the last 30 years.

Header

The next fracture of the Perito Moreno Glacier will be the biggest in 30 years, caused because of the level reached by the Rico Arm of Argentino Lake, 11 meters above it natural dimension. The previous rupture, in 2016, occurred when the arms of the Lake had reached 10.50 meters, a level that had not exceeded from the landslide in 1988, when it overcame 19 meters above it natural dimension.

Despite of carrying out careful statistics about the level of Argentine Lake, the rangers of Los Glaciares National Park explain that this event is not 100 % predictable. About every four or five years the glacier advances enough to reach the shore of Argentino Lake, damming the southern portion arm of the lake, as known as ‘Brazo Rico’, against the huge wall of ice. The water level on the ‘Brazo Rico’ side can rise as much as 60 meters (almost 200 feet) above the surface of Argentino Lake. The tremendous pressure created by the dammed water eventually breaks the wall of ice, causing a massive rupture and sending huge shards of glacier into the lake.

The massive natural monument in the province of Santa Cruz is approximately 97 square miles (250 kilometers), and its walls tower about 70 meters (yards) over water level. It is considered by many to be the 8th natural wonder of the world. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981, the park draws nearly one hundred thousand visitors each year, making it one of the region’s most popular attractions among locals and foreigners.

Besides producing a top Malbec from a vineyard at an elevation of 10,207 feet, Hess has created a stunning museum devoted to the light installations of American artist James Turrell. It is the only place in the world where travellers can find an exclusive museum dedicated to the artist. Each art piece represents five decades of Turrell, like a time tunnel, exhibited in nine light rooms. It is definitely a memorable experience to live once in a lifetime.
